最近新流感 H1N1 有點盛行,感冒引起的肺炎常是造成死亡原因之一。

N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) 乙醯基半胱氨酸,是由人體必須的胺基酸 L-cysteine 加上 acetyl 乙醯,以增加 L-cysteine 穩定度。

NAC 可以幫助體內抗氧化劑-麩胱甘肽glutathione的合成,減少一氧化氮 nitric oxide 的發炎反應。一氧化氮是氣喘、emphysema 肺氣腫、cystic fibrosis 囊性纖維變性 的發炎標記。NAC 也可以減少活性氧化類 reactive oxygen species, 發炎inflammatory cytokines 及致命的 NADPH oxidase。 NAC 可以調控免疫反應,增強殺病菌的 T-cells 的繁殖。

在老鼠的實驗中,NAC 可以大幅減少感染流行性感冒的老鼠的死亡率。NAC 也常被用來稀釋痰液,讓痰容易咳出。
